ICMA Completes Successful Workshops in Three Continents

ICMA recently hosted a very successful 2009 Academy Workshop series with three Workshops around the globe. This feat could not have been accomplished without the help of the 2009 Academy Workshop chairs. We would like to give a big thank you to Green Summit chair Karen Henk of Versatile Card Technology, U.S. Workshop chair John Herslow of CompoSecure, MEA co-chairs Jan Cerajewski of All About Cards and Kazim Awan of Cupola Plastic Cards and European Workshop chair Thies Janczek of COCASO.

This year’s 2009 U.S. Workshop and Green Summit took place at the same location as last year, the Renaissance Hotel and Conference Center located just outside of Chicago in Schaumburg, Illinois.

Topics at ICMA’s Green Summit II – Greening the Factory focused on providing attendees with techniques needed to reduce their carbon footprint and ultimately reduce operational costs. Topics included: a global study on the carbon footprint of cards, a review of authentic sustainability, recovering rejected waste materials, energy saving lighting solutions, secondary packaging, energy efficiency, best practices and a panel addressing what card manufacturers are doing today to be environmentally conscious.

Following on the heels of the Green Summit, ICMA held its U.S. Workshop ,topics included: card market trends & statistics, phone stickers, security of polycarbonate identity documents, testing, barcode quality, NFC, multi-layer foils, OVD detection, equipment preventative maintenance, personalize cards, efficient operations, ID card construction and security features.

The inaugural MEA Workshop took place in Dubai Media City and boasted a strong turn-out for a first time event!  Attendees from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and India attended this event. Topics included: the MEA card market, RFID inlays, card layers, flip chip technology, government challenges of the ID market, contactless & dual interface cards and solutions for PIN applications.

The European Workshop, the last of the 2009 Academy Workshops, took place in mid October in Rome, Italy. Identification and security were hot topics at the European workshop. Other topics included: contactless & dual interface cards, personalization, lamination process, Teslin, single card printing, flip chip technology and inks to authenticate and protect cards.

All three of the Academy Workshops included a networking dinner at a local off-site restaurant. These off-site dinners provided attendees, exhibitors and speakers an opportunity to network and mingle in a fun and relaxed environment.
