Don will present a bold assessment of the current political and economic events and forecasts major trends in the global economy. He has lived 14 years overseas, visited over 50 countries, has lectured on Free Market Systems at the University of Moscow, spoken about the Global Economy for the Saudi Arabian Central Bank, keynoted the Australian IT Summit, advised the Heavy Equipment Industry in Rome, keynoted for international correspondents in Indonesia and spoken on the impact of global warming in Santiago.

Thursday Elan Awards Dinner: A San Sebastian Street Party!

ICMA hosts the annual Élan Awards Ceremony where card manufacturers are recognized for their excellent card design, and vendors are awarded for new innovative products. This year’s Dinner will feature a theme unique to Puerto Rico — A San Sebastian Street Party. This is a party usually held in January where locals celebrate wearing traditional Puerto Rican masks (vejigantes) in brilliant colors of red and yellow, and carved into comical shapes. Live music takes on the feel of a mix of salsa, meringue, and Bomba Plena, a traditional Puerto Rican blend of African rhythms and Spanish / gypsy sounds. In honor of this Latin party, guests should wear shirts in yellow, red, and of course tropical patterned shirts will do!

Optional Events & Golf

Be sure to sign up in advance using the Registration form.

Tuesday morning Golf Outing at Dorado Beach
7:30am

Puerto Rico has some of the best golf courses anywhere in the Caribbean — they are both beautiful in their setting as well as challenging. Balmy weather and the constant trade winds make for the most ideal playing conditions — there is perfect golf weather almost every day of the year. Virtually all of the courses are of championship caliber, created by some of the world’s best golf course designers.

ICMA will host a golf outing on Tuesday morning at Dorado Beach. Consistently rated as one of the world’s best golf resort destinations and past host of the World Cup of Golf and Senior Tournament of Champions, Dorado Beach features two courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. As you might expect from their Oceanside location, you’ll encounter a fair amount of wind and a wealth of exquisite vistas on these two Jones’ classics.  There is a pro shop, full practice facility and professional instruction available.

• Hosted Senior PGA Tour Tournament of Champions
• Hosted World Cup of Golf
• Hosted Senior PGA Tour Championship
• Hosted Mazda Championship
Attendance is limited; register early.

Tuesday afternoon Walking Tour of Historical San Juan
12:30-5:00pm

Guests will love the history and charm of Old San Juan. On this tour, you will first visit Fort San Cristobal where you will receive a guided tour of this fortification. Next stop is Plaza del Quinto Centenario - the Plaza of the Quincentennial, a celebration of the discovery of Puerto Rico. Here you and your guide will commence a leisurely downhill stroll, getting off of the beaten track to make some fascinating finds that elude the ninety percent of visitors.

You will also visit Plaza San Jose, Casa Blanca, the first fortification ever built in old San Juan, also the Ponce de Leon family home, and the Governor’s Mansion for centuries. Here you will explore the Romanesque gardens.

You will exit the gardens of Casa Blanca through a partially hidden access to Calle Sol or the Street of the Sun.  Next you’ll find yourself in the most beautiful section of the entire old city - La Plazoleta de la Rogativa - the Plaza of the Procession. Next, a short walk through San Juan Gate to the water’s edge, then a stroll up from the gate to San Juan Cathedral, retracing the steps of the original conquistadores. At the cathedral you will see the tomb of Juan Ponce de Leon.

At the end of the tour you’re free to explore the many boutiques and shops that line the cobblestoned streets of the old city.

Friday evening Dinner
7:00pm

On this evening, ICMA will make reservations at a few different popular restaurants in San Juan, each representing a different cuisine or theme. Attendees will have the opportunity to sign up for one of these reservations while on site, during the conference. This will enable you to dine with other ICMA guests, while choosing a restaurant that piques your interest. These reservations will be first-come, first-served, and guests will pay at the restaurants.

Information about Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico draws travelers year-round with its miles of smooth, clean beaches, wide range of accommodation, fabulous restaurants and Old San Juan, whose beautifully restored historic sights surrounded by crashing turquoise surf are reason enough to make a trip to Puerto Rico. There’s much to explore as the city extends to the south and east, including vibrant beachfront neighborhoods with a variety of art galleries and restaurants. Within just a couple hours drive from San Juan are Puerto Rico’s rarest natural resources and some of the best beaches and coral reefs in the Caribbean.

There is no place quite like a tropical volcanic island. The geography of the island is very unusual, as it encompasses distinctly different kinds of topography and microclimates in a relatively small area. Puerto Rico is only about 100 miles long and 35 miles wide, so its most distant points are only a three-hour drive apart. It also means that just about every tropical landscape in existence is a short trip from wherever you happen to be!

For those staying a few extra days to enjoy the island, the following are possible excursions and activities to make your stay more enjoyable. Contact the hotel’s concierge for assistance.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving
Puerto Rico is a diver’s paradise with a magnificent ocean temperature of 81ºF and underwater visibility averages from 60 to 75 feet near the beach. Offshore it is easily 100 feet or more! Readers of Scuba Diving magazine have named Puerto Rico as one of the Top Five Destinations for Shore Diving in the Caribbean/Atlantic region. There are countless diving sites around the Island. The most exciting dives are made near Desecheo Island off Rincón, off Mona Island and off Culebra and Vieques. For snorkeling, the shallow reefs near San Juan, Dorado, Mayaguez and Humacao are ideal.

Camuy Cavern
This massive cave system of the Río Camuy Cave Park has a tropical underground river. An impressive section of the complex is open for the public to enjoy. This includes three crater-like sinkholes and two caves. Visitors can ride a trolley that descends into a sinkhole lined with dense tropical vegetation while a guide describes the sights. After a walk across ramps and bridges and through the dramatically illuminated, 170-foot high Cueva Clara, another tram shuttles you to a platform overlooking the 400 foot deep Tres Pueblos Sinkhole. The 268-acre grounds include a cafeteria, picnic area, gift shop and walking trails.

El Yunque
Enjoy the most visited natural site on the island, The Caribbean National Forest, also known as El Yunque. Here numerous hiking trails lead to majestic views and spectacular waterfalls. It is also renowned for the variety of tropical flowers and plants with over 50 species of orchids, 240 species of trees, 150 kinds of fern and 68 species of birds including the local Puerto Rican parrot and of course is also home to the famous El Coquí tree frog. Observation towers are scattered in different areas of the forest for you to take in your surroundings and there are several spots for visitors to take photos or a refreshing dip in the pristine pools.

Bioluminescent Bays
Watch the sea sparkle at night with the darting lights of a million fireflies. Nature lovers come from afar to see this phenomenon, where a bioluminescence is generated by microscopic organisms in the water. Puerto Rico is one of the only places in the world where you can see this every evening at two different protected bays. The best known is at La Parguera, situated between Mayagüez and Ponce in the southwest of the island. The more spectacular however, is in Vieques, the island municipality off of the main island’s northeastern shore. This is a magical yet eerie experience you just have to see for yourself.

Keynote Speaker: Day One
Louie Gravance, Connecting with One’s Purpose Through Changing Times

Louie Gravance is literally changing the consciousness of business in America through his speaking and consulting skills. A premiere example is the work he has done is helping Bank of America navigate what he calls a “culture shift.” MONEY MAGAZINE credits these efforts with “making the banking experience more pleasurable with changes that have improved customer satisfaction.” Gravance was a perfect fit for this project, thanks to skills learned and honed during a twelve-year tenure at The Walt Disney Company in Orlando, Florida. Beginning with the training and orientation program “Traditions” at The Disney University, Louie designed, developed, and delivered countless presentations. Networking with a twist…

Read on to see how attendees were entertained during their stay in Orlando…
All three evenings were included in the Full and Spouse registration fees.

Sunday evening reception
As always, the opening Welcome Reception was held in the Exhibit Hall, in order to showcase the leading suppliers. To add a little fun spin on this evening, ICMA hosted a variety of fun contests to help attendees get to know the exhibitors and find out what they had to offer in a festive atmosphere.

Monday evening reception
In the spirit of the Royal Pacific’s ambiance, Monday night’s reception was a tropical outdoor luau. After being greeted by luau dancers, attendees enjoyed tropical cocktails, music and food....as well as a little Hawaiian inspired entertainment.

Tuesday Awards Gala – a Red Carpet Event
As we were in the land of Universal Studios, it was only appropriate that ICMA host its own red carpet event. Guests dressed to impress at the Annual Élan Awards Gala & Ceremony.
