Personalization & Fulfillment Symposium: Focusing on the Link Between Card Manufacturers and the Consumer January 26, 2012 The Inaugural Personalization & Fulfillment Symposium
On January 26, 2012, 60 members of ICMA attended the first-ever Personalization & Fulfillment Symposium. Starting at the 2011 ICMA EXPO, the ICMA team began to formulate a way to respond to members’ suggestions to include more of a specific focus on the sector of card manufacturing that ultimately brings the card to the consumer—personalization and fulfillment. While this sector is very much a part of ICMA’s membership make-up, the association has never embarked on providing a specific educational program dealing with issues and challenges these members face. The result was the formation of the Personalization and Fulfillment Task Force (PFTF), which includes Lawson Abinanti and Patrick Riley of Prime Factors, Larry Brown of Pittsburgh Embossing Services and ICMA Standards Representative, David Tushie. The PFTF seeks active participation from members whose operations include both secure and non-secure service bureaus, in-house and third-party bureaus, issuers who supply bureaus with their data, equipment suppliers, manufacturers and software providers. The January event featured speakers from a variety of different roles within the personalization and fulfillment industries. Cathy Dundee from Visa kicked off the event with a presentation on Visa security requirements. Tim Enright of CPI Card Group enlightened attendees on how to prepare for a PCI audit. Digital-on-demand technology was also a prominent topic of the day, with presentations from Bob McCormick of Arroweye Solutions, and a special panel discussion on DOD versus embossing that featured speakers Brian Beech of Datacard, Walter Floyd of ITW Card Technologies, Mads Petersen of CIM USA and Diane St. Louis of DVRG. PFTF member and chair of the future personalization track at the 2012 EXPO, Larry Brown of Pittsburgh Embossing Services, discussed the operational implications of secure versus non-secure facilities. Ronald Düe of Otto Kuennecke gave an informative presentation on the direct and indirect distribution of cards around the globe and Barnes International’s Denise Noha educated the audience on the technology, business and relationship issues surrounding EMV. Throughout the one-day event, attendees had the chance to voice their opinions on what they wanted to see in future personalization and fulfillment-focused events through scheduled discussion sessions moderated by the chair, David Tushie and ICMA Founder Emeritus and Industry Advisor, Al Vrancart. This event confirmed what the task force believed to be true. Many members commented that they enjoyed having an event devoted specifically to the issues they face. Most attendees also commented they would attend future events, such as the 2012 EXPO personalization track, focused specifically on this area of the card industry.
Personalization & Fulfillment Task Force The ICMA Personalization & Fulfillment Task Force is the only independent industry organization dedicated to the needs and challenges of bureaus and fulfillment houses. The task force addresses topics of interest to secure and non-secure bureaus and fulfillment houses. The task force’s goal is to provide members with the information they need to be more competitive. Industry experts will make presentations that help ICMA members meet some of their biggest challenges such as data security, EMV adoption, new materials, equipment and cutting-edge processes. Equipment manufacturers will be invited to make unbiased presentations that help members make informed investments in more efficient printers, embossers, inserters, etc. The task force is committed to being first to address new innovations that affect personalization such as NFC, mobile payments, “drop on demand” printing, specialized inks and materials, instant issuance, etc. From the data security to EMV adoption to new card materials, the task force provides insight about trends in technology, equipment, and processes. What specifically will you get out of participating in the task force? Here are potential topics the group will address, by type of business: • Secure bureaus: • Non-secure bureaus: • All personalization bureaus and fulfillment houses: For more information on this Task Force or how to get involved, please contact Dave Tushie, ICMA Standards Representative, Lawson Abinanti, Prime Factors, or the ICMA Headquarters. |
